James Lakenan woud have worked for the Virginia Manufactory in Richmond about 1801 for several
years. He lived in St. Louis at least as of 1818. The Shop and his home were at the same
address.
In 1818 Jacob Hawkens came to St. Louis. James Lakenan and Jacob Hawkens became partners until
1825 when James Lakenan died August 25, 1825. The shop was called James Lakenan & Co. Gunsmith's.
This suggest, that Lakenan's shop was already established before Jacob Hawken came to St. Louis
and James was only the "Co.".
